Inspired by a hand-colored atlas sheet first published in 1573, our illustrious illustration features more modern types of transport, including sailing ships, hot air balloons, trains and planes. Below the map, the quotation by Roman philosopher Cicero keeps it all in perspective: “For what human affairs can seem important to a man who keeps all eternity before his eyes and knows the vastness of the universe?”
